The Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama
receives an apology from the State of Alabama.
On Saturday, October 8, 2022, each tribe in Alabama received a formal letter of apology from both the State of Alabama and its church representatives. Our tribe was among those who received this important acknowledgment.
The apology addressed the many atrocities committed against Native people in Alabama—from the invasion of our lands by settlers, to forced removal, the theft of our homelands, the harm done to our people, and much more.
Along with the letter, each tribe was presented with a symbolic gift: a jar of soil collected from all 67 counties in Alabama, representing the places where our ancestors once lived.
We are deeply grateful for this recognition and for the State of Alabama’s effort to honor our people and acknowledge the hardships endured by our ancestors.
